National Pools of Roanoke: A Legacy of Excellence
Since 1977, National Pools of Roanoke has been a cornerstone of the swimming pool industry in Southwest Virginia. Our family-owned business has grown from humble beginnings to become a leader in pool construction, renovation, and service.
Founded by Gloria "Winky" Vaughan and her husband, James Vaughan, National Pools of Roanoke began operations in a 3,000 sq. ft. building with just six employees
Expansion into the Commercial Market
The 1980s and 1990s marked a period of significant growth for National Pools of Roanoke. During this time, we expanded our expertise into the commercial market, specializing in constructing pools for municipalities, YMCAs, and large-scale projects including 25- and 50-meter competitive swimming facilities.
Our workforce grew to 40 employees, with 15 crews actively working on projects throughout the region. This expansion not only diversified our portfolio but also established National Pools as a major player in both residential and commercial pool construction, setting the foundation for our future success and industry recognition.
Construction Milestones
By the early 2000s, National Pools of Roanoke had achieved significant milestones in pool construction and renovation. The company had successfully completed over 700 residential pools, demonstrating its expertise in creating custom backyard retreats for homeowners.
In the commercial sector, National Pools had constructed more than 400 pools, showcasing its ability to handle large-scale projects for municipalities, YMCAs, and other organizations. Additionally, the company had renovated over 500 pools, primarily in the commercial sector, highlighting its skill in modernizing and restoring existing aquatic facilities.
National Recognition
In 2022, National Pools of Roanoke was honored as a PSN Top 50 Builder, further solidifying its reputation as a premier pool construction company. This recognition followed the company’s 2018 PSN Top 50 Service award, highlighting its excellence in pool maintenance and customer care.
In 2021, National Pools also gained national recognition as "Retailer of the Year" from the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance, underscoring its leadership in the retail sector of the pool and spa industry.
Despite challenges posed by the global pandemic, including supply chain disruptions and inventory shortages, National Pools of Roanoke demonstrated resilience and adaptability. The company proactively addressed these challenges by placing early orders for the upcoming season, exploring new sales channels such as an online store, and offering curbside pickup to meet evolving customer needs.

Third-Generation Leadership and Continued Growth
Now in its third generation of family ownership, National Pools of Roanoke operates from a 29,000 sq. ft. facility, including a 10,000 sq. ft. showroom.With approximately 50 full- and part-time employees, we continue to serve Southwest Virginia and beyond, maintaining our commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.
Throughout our history, we've remained dedicated to building fine in-ground gunite swimming pools, providing expert renovations, and offering top-notch service and retail solutions. With over 45 years of leadership, Winky Vaughan co-founded National Pools in 1977 and continues to guide the company with a legacy of excellence in pool construction, service, and customer satisfaction.
Since joining the family business in 1997, Lee Vaughan has led the service and renovation divisions, overseeing commercial filtration, chemical automation, and a team of 20+ professionals.
Beginning his career in 1993, Jason Vaughan now oversees sales, design, and construction, ensuring quality workmanship and customer satisfaction across residential and commercial projects.
Since 2000, Austin Vaughan has played a vital role in new pool sales, design, and construction, bringing award-winning craftsmanship and attention to detail to every project.
A dedicated member of the National Pools team since 1985, Beverly Smith serves as Vice President, bringing expertise in accounting, service, and construction management.
Joining full-time in 2003, Ginnie Vaughan manages the retail store and outdoor furniture division, focusing on purchasing, sales, and customer service excellence.
Since 2005, Mea Vaughan has led the Residential and Commercial Service & Maintenance division, bringing expertise in pool operations and service management.
A valued team member since 1991, Tanya Toney has over 30 years of experience in accounting and pool industry operations, ensuring smooth financial and administrative management.
